China and Africa: A Century of Engagement

29 June 2012 - 10:00am to 11:00am

Chatham House, London

Ambassador David Shinn, Adjunct Professor of International Affairs, George Washington University
Discussant: Dr Kerry Brown, Head, Asia Programme, Chatham House
Chair: Dr Jing Gu, Research Fellow, Institute of Development Studies (IDS)

Ambassador Shinn will discuss his new book, co-authored by Joshua Eisenman, on the relationship between this powerful Asian nation and the countries of Africa. Looking at a broad range of areas that define this relationship, Ambassador Shinn will argue that Africans and Chinese are still developing their perceptions of each other. He will demonstrate that while China's connection to Africa is different from that of Western nations, it is no less complex.
