Niger’s Growing Regional and International Importance

12 June 2012 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Chatham House, London

HE Mahamadou Issoufou, President of the Republic of Niger
Chair: Dr David Styan, Birkbeck University

Land-locked Niger is pivotal in the region, bridging north and sub-Saharan Africa, and west and central Africa. It is also strategic as a major source of uranium. The country has won international respect for its handling of and smooth transition from a constitutional crisis in 2009-10.

In his first public address in the UK, the President will discuss his strategy for responding to both the evolving regional security situation and the deepening humanitarian crisis. He will discuss his priorities for Niger, the opportunities the country presents to the region and internationally, and the growing bilateral relationship with the UK.

The President's remarks will be made in French with consecutive translation.
