Progress and Prospects of Cooperation in the Nile Basin

5 October 2012 - 10:30am to 11:30am

Chatham House, London

Yacob Arsano, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science and International Relations, Addis Ababa University; Director, Addis Ababa University Press

The River Nile is a crucial resource in the Horn of Africa, a source of life to millions of people and a cause of both tensions and alliances among regional powers. Recent agricultural and industrial developments and a rapidly growing population have made the Nile waters an increasingly scarce commodity. But while competition and confrontation over the Nile looks likely to grow, opportunities are arising that could create a more constructive interdependence in the region.

Professor Yacob will discuss the opportunities for cooperation among the Nile basin countries and progress to date.
