The US and Angola: Pragmatic Partners
Ambassador Christopher McMullen, Ambassador of the United States to Angola
Chair: Alex Vines, Research Director, Area Studies and International Law; Head, Africa Programme, Chatham House
In May 2013 the US and Angola will mark 20 years of diplomatic relations. Maintaining their mutually important strategic relationship has not always been straightforward as the two countries have had to navigate often divergent outlooks and domestic priorities. Most recently, banking issues have tested the relationship and new US legislation on revenue transparency is also likely to impact Angola. The bilateral relationship is however a strong one based on pragmatism, and is likely to withstand such challenges.
At this roundtable event, Ambassador McMullen will offer a US perspective on recent developments in Angola and the bilateral relationship.
