Politics and Stability in Tajikistan
Following clashes in Gorno-Badakhshan in July, the heaviest since the end of the civil war, the Tajikstan government of Emomali Rakhmon has stepped up its efforts to preserve the regime. Ahead of the November 2013 presidential election, the government appears to be clamping down on expressions of dissent by, among other things, restricting the operation of international organizations in the country. In addition to internal political challenges, Tajikistan faces potential difficulties following the NATO forces withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014, an uneasy relationship with Russia, and an inability to shrug off its status as a transit corridor for drug traffickers.
Muhiddin Kabiri will discuss the challenges facing Tajikistan.
Attendance is by invitation only.
