Professor Ali Ansari, Director, Institute of Iranian Studies, University of St Andrews
Dr Patricia Lewis, Research Director, International Security, Chatham House
Yossi Mekelberg, Associate Fellow, Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House; Programme Director, International Relations, Regent's College
This parliamentary briefing will assess recent developments in Iran's nuclear programme, Tehran's international negotiating position and the choices facing Israel, the United States and the UK in responding to a nuclearizing Iran.
The speakers will consider these issues in light of the recent conflict in Gaza, talks between Israel and Iran and the re-election of President Obama. They will address the following questions: What are the main domestic drivers of Iranian politics and diplomacy? What are the prospects for a nuclear agreement and what would it need to include for it to be acceptable to both the West and Tehran? And what options are available to the UK and its allies in responding to the Iranian nuclear challenge?
Please note this briefing is for MPs and peers only.
