Fiona Hill, Director, Center on the United States and Europe, The Brookings Institution; Author, Mr Putin: Operative in the Kremlin
Chair: Edward Lucas, International Section Editor, The Economist

Drawing on a range of sources, including her own personal encounters, Fiona Hill will explore Russian President Vladimir Putin’s personality, motivations and political influence. She will begin by considering the formative experiences in President Putin’s past which she argues have shaped both his character and the nature of the political system he has built. She will go on to identify what she regards as the key facets of his persona – the statist, the history man, the survivalist, the outsider, the free marketeer and the case officer – and argue that understanding these is crucial for policy-makers when deciding how best to engage with Russia.
