Real-Time Diplomacy: Politics and Power in the Social Media Era
Philip Seib, Director, Center on Public Diplomacy; Professor of Journalism, Public Diplomacy and International Relations, University of Southern California
Chair: Bridget Kendall, Diplomatic Correspondent, BBC
The speaker will argue that conventional diplomacy has become an anachronism in a high-speed, media-centric world. International events, such as the Arab uprisings, move quickly, as does public knowledge of and reaction to those events. The speaker will explore how diplomacy is evolving as policy-makers find themselves without the time to carefully weigh alternatives, pressed to respond in real time.
