Trends in Civil Society in Russia

16 April 2013 - 4:00pm to 5:30pm

Chatham House, London

Yuri Dzhibladze, President, Centre for the Development of Democracy and Human Rights, Russia

Since Vladimir Putin returned to presidency in Russia, NGOs have faced an increasingly restrictive environment, especially those seeking to improve the rule of law and human rights. A recent law labels NGOs that receive money from abroad as foreign agents, activists have been arrested on flimsy pretexts, and several aid organizations have been expelled.

The speaker will remark on recent developments in Russian civil society, and discussions will consider what the EU can do to better support civil society.

Attendance is by invitation only.

This event is organized with the EU-Russia Centre.
