Muslim Tribes and the War on Terror

25 June 2013 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Chatham House, London

Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies, American University in Washington, DC; Non-Resident Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution
Chair: Professor Lord Tony Giddens, Life Fellow, London School of Economics

Drawing on 40 case studies of societies across the Muslim world, the speaker will argue that the ‘war on terror’ has become a global war on tribal Islam. He will discuss how the war is reviving old tensions and exacerbating already-broken relationships between central governments and tribes on their peripheries.
