Eugene Jarecki, Filmmaker; Director, The House I Live In
Chair: Professor Alex Stevens, Professor in Criminal Justice and Deputy Head of School, School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research; University of Kent

More than 40 years after President Richard Nixon declared the 'war on drugs,' the US has built the highest incarceration rate in the world while rates of drug use and addiction have remained unchanged. The speaker will share clips from his Sundance Award-winning film The House I Live In in order to draw lessons from America's drug war, which he believes has failed, and argue for a shift away from criminalization to a model that instead prioritizes public health over punishment.

This event will be followed by a drinks reception at 19:45.
