Egypt: Human Rights Challenges in a Post-Revolutionary Society
Ambassador Abdullah Al Ashaal, Head, National Council for Human Rights, Egypt
Chair: Maha Azzam, Associate Fellow, Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House
While discussions relating to Egypt's post-revolutionary challenges often focus on political and economic issues, this event will consider a third, overarching dimension: the issue of human rights.
Decades of repressive governance have hindered the development of institutionally guaranteed human rights in Egypt. In its third year since the overthrow of the old regime, the country is faced with growing international pressure to improve its human rights status. The speaker will outline the major obstacles to safeguarding human rights and offer a view for the promotion of greater awareness and protection of individual rights and freedoms.
