'Cyber War Will Not Take Place'

5 June 2013 - 5:00pm to 6:30pm

Chatham House, London

Dr Thomas Rid, Author, Cyber War Will Not Take Place; Reader, Department of War Studies, Kings College London
Chair: Dave Clemente, Research Associate, International Security, Chatham House

Thomas Rid will argue that the focus on war and winning distracts from the real challenge of cyberspace: non-violent confrontation that may rival or even replace violence in surprising ways. He will look at how the cyber security threat consists of three different vectors: espionage, sabotage, and subversion. Discussion will also focus on the most significant hacks and attacks, and explore key questions such as: What are cyber weapons? How have they changed the meaning of violence? And who is most vulnerable: which countries, industries, individuals?
