Southeast Asia in Contemporary US Strategy

23 July 2013 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Chatham House, London

Euan Graham, Senior Fellow, Maritime Security Programme, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore

The speaker will discuss the US 'pivot' or 're-balance' to the wider Asian region, highlighting the US's strategic focus on the South China Sea. He will also examine southeast Asian nations' strategic perspectives regarding the maritime disputes in the region, and argue that accounting for the tension between ASEAN's declaratory agenda and the increasingly divided approaches of its members is now central to explaining the region's choppy and fragmented maritime strategic environment.
