Noboru Yamaguchi, Professor, National Defence Academy of Japan

The speaker will examine Japan's changing defence policy, in light of intensifying Sino-Japanese relations following the September 2012 purchase of three of the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands by the government of Japan, and the threat posed by the DPRK through its nuclear and long-range missile programs. He will discuss Japan's aims to adopt new Defence Program Guidelines, which would place emphasis on the defence posture in its southwestern area facing the East China Sea and more active and mobile defence capabilities, by the end of the year.

The event is funded by the Nippon Foundation and held in partnership with them and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
