International Responses to Transnational Challenges in North and West Africa
Ramifications of the 2012 coup in Mali and 2013 intervention go beyond the country’s borders and will continue after planned elections. Poverty, poor governance, the spread of extremism and the largely undetected criminal activity criss-crossing remote desert areas threaten to undermine efforts to achieve sustainable regional political stability, and have brought international focus on how to most effectively coordinate responses in a policy environment of limited resources and competing priorities.
João Honwana will discuss the role the international community can play in addressing the drivers of instability faced by countries in north and west Africa and how to bolster stability in the western Sahel region.
Attendance is by invitation only.
