Paul Danahar, Author, The New Middle East: The World After the Arab Spring; Middle East Bureau Chief, BBC (2010-13)
Chair: Professor Fawaz A Gerges, Professor of Middle Eastern Politics and International Relations, London School of Economics

Overview

The speaker will share his insights and analysis into the political forces shaping the Middle East since the beginning of the Arab Spring in 2011. Drawing on his extensive experience in the region and access to key regional figures, including Bashar al-Assad, as well as senior UN and US officials, he will offer his thoughts on what the changes taking place mean for both the region and the West.

He will argue that Western powers still have no policy to deal with the collapse of the old order and, in the place of Arab nationalism and Ba'athism, that political Islam and sectarianism will define the new Middle East.
