Obama's Rendezvous with Destiny: The US Pivot Toward Asia and Lessons from History

Chatham House, London

US and the Americas Programme, The Changing Role of the US in Asia

Participants

Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director, Lowy Institute for International Policy
Chair: Lord Williams of Baglan, Distinguished Visiting Fellow and Acting Head, Asia Programme, Chatham House

Overview

According to Michael Fullilove, the strategic challenges lying ahead of President Obama's 'pivot' to Asia - including a plethora of pressing foreign policy issues requiring attention coupled with increasing demands to focus on domestic issues - are similar to those faced by President Franklin Roosevelt seven decades ago. He will argue that, for the Asia rebalancing to succeed, President Obama should look to historical examples for action.

There will be a 15-minute opening speech followed by questions and discussion.

To enable as open a discussion as possible, this meeting will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
