China and the Resource Boom: Comparative Insights from Latin America and Australia
The speaker will discuss China’s increasing demand for resources from Latin America and Australia. He will examine how, in Latin America, this has resulted in structural challenges and the development of new strategies for negotiating with Chinese state-owned enterprises, integrating growing Chinese communities into national social and economic systems and promoting education about Chinese politics and culture.
He will draw parallels with Australia, which has expressed concern regarding Chinese land acquisitions and their effect on the local economy, environmental sustainability and employment standards. He will argue that Australia and Latin America harbour a shared need to manage their changing circumstances, both in dialogue with each other and with Chinese partners.
