Thailand's Southern Conflict: Challenges at the Centre and Periphery?

3 December 2013 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Chatham House, London

Duncan McCargo, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House

The speaker will discuss a range of serious challenges currently facing Thailand, including the ongoing deadly insurgency in the south, the intense polarization involving street protests that has re-emerged in the wake of controversial moves to introduce a blanket amnesty bill for those accused of political offences following the 2006 military coup, and why the disputed Preah Vihear temple complex on the Thai-Cambodian border is back in the news. He will examine how these developments are interlinked, and how Thailand could begin to address the structural issues that underpin these conflicts.

This event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
