UN Peacekeeping Operations in Africa: Change in 2013 and Priorities for 2014

13 January 2014 - 12:30 to 13:30

Chatham House, London

Hervé Ladsous, UN Under-Secretary General for the Department of Peacekeeping Operations
Chair: Knox Chitiyo, Associate Fellow, Africa Programme, Chatham House

Eight of the 15 United Nations peacekeeping missions are in Africa, and 70 per cent of all UN peacekeepers globally are deployed on the continent. However, with violence in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa increasing in 2013, and the surrender of the M23 rebels in the DRC, the role and mandate of the UN in peacekeeping is under growing scrutiny.

At this event, Hervé Ladsous, UN Under-Secretary General for the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, will reflect on the changes and emerging challenges of 2013, and outline the organization’s priorities for 2014.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
