Laying the Foundations for South Africa's Future: Education for Employment and Development

23 January 2014 - 13:00 to 14:00

Chatham House, London

Hon. Dr Bonginkosi Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education and Training, Republic of South Africa
Chair: Sarah Cottingham, Executive Director, Africa Educational Trust

With an estimated 3.4 million South Africans aged 15-24 not in formal education, employment or training, policy-makers and higher education institutions in South Africa are faced with the dual challenge of providing employment-focused inclusive education and training while maintaining the standard of higher education. In January 2014, the government of South Africa launched a White Paper outlining the importance of diversified yet integrated higher education in cooperation with employers.

Hon. Dr Bonginkosi Nzimande will discuss the recent White Paper policy framework and his vision for a higher education system in South Africa that is focused on job creation and development. He will also outline the importance of skills development and job creation for private sector growth and economic transformation, and how international partners can play a supporting role in developing higher education in South Africa.
