Mozambique’s Prospects: Investment and the Importance of Strategic Infrastructure Development

3 February 2014 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Chatham House, London

Hon Gabriel Muthisse, Minister of Transport and Communications, Mozambique
Chair: Elisabete Azevedo-Harman, Research Associate, Africa Programme, Chatham House

Natural resource discoveries, including large reserves of coal, gas and oil, have transformed Mozambique’s economic prospects. In recent years, foreign direct investment to Mozambique has rapidly increased and the government is seeking to attract more investors to further boost the economy. However, in addition to recent political challenges, overcoming the country’s infrastructure deficit remains a significant constraint on growth and development.

Hon Gabriel Muthisse will discuss the strategies and priorities of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the importance of infrastructure in nurturing Mozambique’s potential. He will also outline how international partners can engage with Mozambique in overcoming this challenge.
