Investing in Infrastructure: Boosting Growth in Japan and in Europe

Chatham House, London

International Economics Department

Japan is faced with the challenge of meeting the infrastructure needs of post-earthquake reconstruction and of organizing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This roundtable event will discuss new investment and financing opportunities in Japan, drawing comparisons to the UK. Different ways of attracting foreign capital will be discussed, including simplifying rules, easing regulatory barriers, and adopting initiatives which involve the private sector. The organization of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will also be discussed, with infrastructure spending expected to reach £2.9 billion. The experience of the London 2012 Olympics will be used to provide background for the discussion.

This event is supported by the Japan External Trade Organization, Daiwa Capital Markets, Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, AstraZeneca, Hitachi and the Development Bank of Japan, and organized with the help of The Japan Society.
