Overview

Despite simmering unrest and strikes, South Africa’s mining industry has remained a vital part of the country’s economy. The sector, which contributes to a significant proportion of world production and reserves, has benefitted from rising commodity prices, but growth has been hampered by inter-union rivalry and debates surrounding nationalization.

At this event the speakers will present their views on the role and future of the mining sector in South Africa. They will discuss recent inter-union rivalries,  union members’ silicosis cases, and how the debate surrounding the mining industry could impact South Africa’s forthcoming elections.
