For a state in which much of political life, governance and the judiciary has been captured by vested interests for the past 25 years, the tally of democratic reforms undertaken since the Euromaidan revolution is impressive.

But these reforms are neither complete nor irreversible, and in 2017 there have been signs of substantial pushback from the Ukrainian establishment. Most observers continue to see grounds for optimism, but more needs to be done to secure the country’s still-fragile political transformation.
