Summary

Hamid Karzai was the first elected President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (2004–14). He joined the mujahideen against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, and served as Director of the Foreign Relations Unit in the Office of the President of the Interim Government, established in 1989, and Deputy Foreign minister of the Mujahideen Government (1992–94). He helped organize a national Loya Jirga (Grand Council) for peaceful resolution of differences in Afghanistan. In 2001, he helped coordinate local efforts to expel the Taliban in Uruzgan Province and was elected Chairman of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan at the UN-sponsored Bonn Conference.
