Dr Shashi Tharoor is the Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram in India, and a former international civil servant. He served as India’s Minister of State for Human Resource Development and Minister of State for External Affairs, and is currently Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs. He was previously at the United Nations for nearly three decades, including as Under-Secretary General under Kofi Annan. He is an award-winning author and pioneered using social media for political interaction. He was India’s most followed politician on Twitter with 4.1 million followers, until overtaken in 2013 by the current prime minister, Narendra Modi.
