This paper analyses Western political and economic engagement in the Caucasus and Central Asia and explores the issue of how such involvement shaped developments in the countries of the region in terms of their internal politics, their values and the orientations they assumed. The extent to which Western engagement has influenced economic and security policy-making in the region is also addressed.
