The chapter, taken from the book America and a Changed World: A Question of Leadership, provides an overview of what the Obama administration has achieved during its first year in office in developing its policy towards East Asia, as well as the response of Asian states to America's effort. It also considers what more concrete policy initiatives the administration might consider in the near to long term.

The chapter focuses on the potential future US role in promoting security and stability in East Asia, through its key bilateral regional relationship - with Japan - and through its support for the broadening and deepening process of regional integration.
