This is a transcript of a speech made by Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP, Secretary of State for Defence, at Chatham House on 19 May 2011.

The Secretary of State set out the scale of the challenge facing UK defence over the next decade and explained how the Strategic Defence and Security Review meets the strategic requirements of the country. He argued that maintaining the UK's strategic reach and influence and protecting national security must be underpinned by a strong economy and adaptable military forces.
