This is a summary of a speech made by Dr Michael Barr, Lecturer in International Politics, Newcastle University, on 22 September at Chatham House. Dr Barr discussed the concept of soft power in relation to China, arguing that Chinese soft power differs from that of western countries principally because it has an inward-looking, domestic aspect.
