Chatham House

This is a transcript of a speech made by journalist and author Jonathan Steele, on 12 December 2011 at Chatham House.

Mr Steele, who was engaged in numerous reporting assignments in Kabul during both the Soviet-led and US and British interventions, compared the US and Soviet strategies in Afghanistan. He argued that, just as Gorbachev eventually came to realise that negotiation and withdrawal was the only way forward, resolution of the current conflict can only be achieved through similar means.
