Yemen’s conflict is often reduced in mainstream coverage to a two-sided fight between the Houthis and the country’s internationally recognized government. However, the political economy of the conflict is much more complex and involves an array of actors fighting for control over the country’s territory and resources.
The war has also involved regional actors including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, making peacebuilding efforts much more complicated. Amid a stalled UN-led peace process, the civilian population lives in a deep humanitarian crisis with ever increasing risk of famine, spread of preventable diseases, and human rights violations.
Our projects map key local and regional stakeholders in Yemen’s conflict, examine prospects for peace, and present long-term approaches for ending the crisis, state-building, and economic reconstruction.
