The world’s forests are a precious resource. They sustain the livelihoods of up to 1.6 billion people while also providing food, medicine and other goods for the rest of the world’s population. Home to countless species of animals and plants, forests also support water systems and food production and are critical in combating climate change.

Good forest governance is essential if the sustainable management of this important resource is to be achieved. Through our research and convening of discussions with stakeholders, Chatham House aims to raise awareness of the issues of illegal logging, forest degradation and deforestation, and seeks to identify those policy options that can help to address them.
