Biography

Nilza Amaral is Head of Research Operations at the Global Governance and Security Centre at Chatham House. Part of its leadership team, Nilza played a key role in establishing the Centre and now oversees delivery of its strategic priorities across a diverse portfolio of activities. 

Nilza’s expertise includes the conduct of war with a particular focus on armed drones, including ethics, the transformation of war, and the relationship between drone technology, the use of force and societal norms. Nilza has also analysed what AI safety means for the integration of AI in the military domain and how this could impact on international security.


Prior to her current role, she managed the International Security Programme at Chatham House, having initially joined the team as programme administrator in 2014.

Nilza holds an MSc in International Security and Global Governance and a BA in Politics and Society, both from Birkbeck, University of London.
