Although initially thought of purely in terms of the size of their economies, BRICS countries have become an important political force in the global trading system and heavily influenced the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In 2023 it was announced that Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates would join the group in 2024.
