Chatham House research is required reading for diplomats around the world. Recent publications have been briefed to the UK government, Five Eyes embassies and OECD ambassadors, as well as many other policymakers across the globe.

How we are making a difference

Developed foreign policy options for the UK government

Chatham House experts discussed the analysis in our paper on Three foreign policy priorities for the next UK government at an event with the UK foreign secretary and the chancellor, and chaired a debate with the foreign secretary at the  Labour Party Conference.

We also briefed the UK’s Foreign Affairs Committee on key foreign policy questions and contributed to the World in 2025 report, an annual FCDO publication which informs UK government foreign policy priorities.

Our recommendations on topics such as defence spending, security and EU–UK cooperation on climate and foreign policy, are now echoed in UK government policy.

Advised governments on tackling and adapting to climate change

Chatham House research and evidence informed the UK government’s climate risks strategy and our experts briefed the UK Climate Change Committee. We also contributed to the FCDO’s ‘China Audit’ and convened UK and Chinese policy experts to collaborate on mitigating climate risks. We received feedback that our UK–China convening had been invaluable at a time when other policy channels were constrained.

Advised on the reconstruction of Ukraine

Our Ukraine Forum has advised the UK, German and Italian governments on hosting the annual Ukraine Recovery Conference. We helped shape agendas and provided analysis and policy recommendations on the reconstruction and recovery of Ukraine. Letters of appreciation were received from both the UK and Ukrainian governments. Our paper on Four scenarios for the end of the war in Ukraine ranked in the top three on Google for searches on when and how the war in Ukraine will end.

Played a central role in the public and strategic technology agenda

Chatham House co-founded the Public AI Network – a global coalition driving policy and investment in sovereign technology for common good. We lead public and private dialogue with decision-makers in the UK, US, Europe and in Asia, which is contributing to significant philanthropic commitments to use AI to benefit society. US government officials stated that our convening and research had made them rethink values in technology, particularly in relation to semiconductor chips.

Informed the development of an International Plastics Treaty

On behalf of the UK and Brazil, we convened dialogues with more than 40 government-nominated experts to help shape the proposed International Plastics Treaty. The UK government formally submitted our research to the UN and all member countries, and it has informed governments’ negotiating positions.

Influenced policy in the Middle East

Our experts gave evidence to the UK Foreign Affairs Committee for the 2024 inquiry into the UK’s engagement with the Middle East and North Africa. We also influenced the UK’s assessment of the conflict in Lebanon and provided evidence which contributed to the UN reassessing its Assistance Mission for Iraq. Our project to support Libyan anti-corruption agencies helped them to agree a comprehensive joint anti-corruption strategy, due to be publicly launched in 2025.

Influenced European diplomatic engagement in Tanzania

Our paper on Reviving Tanzania’s regional leadership and global engagement informed key diplomatic and policy discussions at national and international levels. The EU Mission in Dar es Salaam and representatives from EU embassies have made the paper mandatory reading for staff preparing for new assignments in Tanzania. The paper is also being used in the education of Tanzania’s future diplomats and the former foreign minister of Tanzania made it compulsory reading for Tanzanian heads of mission worldwide.
