Biography
Stephen Farrell joined Chatham House in May 2025. Before that he was a foreign correspondent and video journalist for The Times of London, The New York Times and Reuters.
Based in the Middle East, South Asia, London and New York, he reported from Kosovo during the Balkans conflict; from Afghanistan and Pakistan before and after 9/11; from Iraq during the 2003 US-led invasion, and from Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
He co-wrote the book ‘Hamas: The Quest for Power’ charting the militant group’s early years in Gaza, its victory in 2006 Palestinian elections and the 2023 cross-border attack into Israel and its aftermath.
He was part of the New York Times team that won an Overseas Press Club of America award for a multimedia package on the American troop ‘surge’ in Iraq, and a video documentary team that won a World Press Photo prize for coverage of New York politics.
