The Syrian Civil Defense was founded in 2013. The group, whose 2,900 members are distinguished in the field by their wearing of white helmets, is unarmed and claims complete neutrality in the Syrian civil war. They operate as first responder, search and rescue teams in areas outside of Syrian government control.
A new Netflix Original documentary from the team behind the Oscar-nominated Virunga tells the story of the White Helmets. Shot by a camera crew embedded for five weeks with the rescue volunteers in Turkey near the Syrian border, the film also includes footage from inside Aleppo.
This event will screen the entire film before a holding Q&A focused on its making, the work of the Syrian Civil Defense and the recent campaign to have the group nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
This event will be followed by a reception.
