Briefing: Attacking and defending Kyiv

— Experts analyse Russia’s tactics and Ukraine’s readiness in the attempted assault on Kyiv.

Putin’s political end game of establishing control over the capital and installing a puppet government remains in place. But to do so, capturing Kyiv must be Russia’s principal military goal, with large concentrations of troops currently besieging the city.

Despite Russia’s evident difficulties in ground operations, it has increased its efforts to encircle the capital, conduct artillery and air strikes and is pushing Belarus to send its troops in from the north.

At the same time Ukrainian Armed Forces are mounting a remarkable defence with more than 100,000 of the country’s civilians signing up to join territorial defence units.

The briefing covers the following issues:

  • Russian tactics in its attempted assault on Kyiv
  • Ukraine’s readiness and morale to defend its capital
  • Mobilisation and readiness of territorial defence units
  • Possible scenarios
