17 March 2025 — 5:30PM TO 7:00PM
Embassy of the Republic of Poland 47 Portland Place London W1B 1JH United Kingdom

A fully integrated European financial market comparable to that of the US has long been a goal of the European Union. But while much progress has been made the ultimate goal is still to be achieved. Getting the relationship right between the EU’s financial market and the City of London could be a significant component needed for success.

This panel discussion is being held during the ongoing Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU and is being hosted by Chatham House in conjunction with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London, PKO Bank Polski and the European Financial Congress. The panel discusses the state of play on the EU’s programme of financial market reform and what the future relationship with the UK financial services sector could look like amid EU-UK reset talks. It also considers the strategic role of European financial integration in the present geopolitical context, and the Polish perspective on these matters as a country with the fastest growing economy in the EU but with a capital market that is still under-exploited.

Specific questions for discussion include:

  • How could more rapid financial integration underpin Europe’s future economic dynamism?  What are the main obstacles to further integration of EU financial markets and how can these be overcome? How could the effects vary for countries inside and outside the EU/eurozone?
  • What should a constructive relationship between the EU financial market and London’s financial centre look like?
  • What role could European financial integration play in preventing fracturing of global financial markets and in strengthening democratic forces in the face of growing geopolitical tensions?

The evening begins at 17.30 with welcoming remarks from Mr Piotr Wilczek, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, Mr Jakub Jaworowski, Minister of State Assets, Republic of Poland, and Mr Szymon Midera, CEO, PKO Bank Polski, followed by a fireside chat with Mr Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, former Prime Minister of Poland, and a panel discussion with Q&A. The event will conclude with a reception from 19.00 - 20.30.

Please note that guests will be asked to present photo ID at the entrance to the Embassy. The panel discussion is held under the Chatham House Rule.
