Iran Workshop Series: The Arms Embargo, JCPOA and the Country's Role in the Middle East

Chatham House’s Middle East and North Africa Programme and the Near East South Asia (NESA) Center for Strategic Studies convened a half-day virtual workshop in September 2020 to discuss recent developments around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the arms embargo on Iran and the country’s role in the Middle East.

Event date and time: 11 September 2020 — 13:30 TO 15:30 BST

Event location: Online

During the first session, workshop participants exchanged views and analysis on European perspectives on the state of the Iran nuclear agreement. Attendees also examined remaining policy options over the expiration of the Iranian arms embargo in October 2020 and considered US efforts to impose ‘snapback’ sanctions on Iran. The second session examined how, under the impact of US sanctions and COVID-19, Iran’s role in the region is evolving after the killing of Iranian Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani on 3 January 2020.
