On 23 May 2021, Minsk seriously escalated the political crisis in Belarus by grounding and seizing passengers from Ryanair Flight 4978. In response to this incident and the regime’s continued repression and torture of protestors and other manifestations of its disregard for human rights and democracy, Chatham House reconvened a group of international experts on Belarus to provide updated recommendations for maintaining the West’s engagement with the country. The meeting focuses on the objectives of Western engagement, diplomatic relations, sanctions and the best ways of supporting the democratic movement.
