Heightened UK government interest in the Indo-Pacific has broadly been welcomed across the region. However, many partners have privately questioned the durability of British engagement, given the challenges the government faces at home and in Europe. A slew of recent government strategy documents and reviews have provided clues to the UK’s direction of travel but leave lingering questions.
Chatham House is publishing two papers that set out how the UK can better prosecute its national interests vis-à-vis China and the rest of the region, and help shape the region to be more peaceful, resilient and prosperous.
This webinar draws upon the Chatham House publications, What the UK must get right in its China Strategy and Why the Indo-Pacific should be a higher priority for the UK (forthcoming), to suggest how the UK government can develop a more effective and enduring approach to China and the Indo-Pacific. The panellists will argue that the UK’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific should not be seen as an isolated priority but as a source of partnerships that will help to further Britain’s wider interests.
