Making peace last: Lessons from Colombia and Northern Ireland

This event is organized in association with the University of Notre Dame and supported by Humanity United.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Juan Manuel Santos, former President of Colombia, joins other peace-making experts to discuss how lessons from Colombia and Northern Ireland can be applied to current conflicts, and to future peace processes.

Event date and time: 28 October 2026 — 15:00 TO 16:30 GMT

Event location: Hybrid — Chatham House and Online

Join us to mark ten years since Colombia’s 2016 Peace Agreement. Drawing on experiences from Colombia and Northern Ireland, this event explores what makes peace agreements durable, how implementation can be sustained over time, and which lessons on negotiation, justice and conflict resolution can inform peace efforts.

This event discusses:

  • How was Colombia’s Peace Agreement reached?
  • What can Colombia and Northern Ireland teach about preventing renewed conflict?
  • What makes peace last beyond the moment of agreement?
  • Which lessons apply to contemporary conflicts and peace processes?
  • How have verification, transitional justice and inclusive institutions helped sustain peace?
  • How should peacebuilding adapt to future conflicts and changing political conditions?
