The weapon of terrorism has taken a radical new turn, especially in the Middle East. Suicide bombing is widely regarded as legitimate.

Nation-states and their western backers are on the militants’ target list. Democracy and economic reform are unlikely to be adequate responses.

The Middle East has produced two main variants of terrorism. There is what can be referred to as ‘traditional’ terrorism. That is to say, terrorism as understood in the European context and indeed introduced to the region by European Jewish immigrants in their confrontation with the British government during the creation of the state of Israel.
