European Union Treaty: Trust the People

Irish voters have decided the European Union Lisbon Treaty is dead. Three years ago the French rejected its predecessor, the Union constitution. Ironically, it is now up to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who takes over the rotating presidency, to rescue Europe. This is only possible by focussing firmly on democratic consent.
