Middle East and the United States: Cause and Effect

In the wake of the Gaza conflict, President Barack Obama cannot avoid setting out terms of engagement with the Middle East. The most obvious priority is to provide a template for renewed peace efforts between Israelis and Palestinians, backed by the reconstruction of Gaza’s damaged infrastructure. As urgent as this is, the Obama team would be mistaken to divorce short-term goals from a deeper reassessment of the dynamics of the Muslim world.
