Assata Shakur

The extraordinary life of one of America’s most wanted terrorists

The World Today Updated 4 March 2021 1 minute READ

1 Nine of the ten people on the FBI’s list of Most Wanted Terrorists are Islamic militants. The 10th is the only woman: JoAnne Chesimard, 67, better known as Assata Shakur, a one-time member of the Black Liberation Army.

2 Shakur was stopped for a ‘faulty tail light’ in New Jersey in 1973. This led to a shootout that killed a state trooper, Werner Foerster, along with the car’s driver. Shakur was wounded and arrested. Though she maintained that she had been shot with her hands up – forensic evidence appeared to support her claim – prosecutors said she and her companions opened fire first. In 1977 she was convicted of murder and assault and sentenced to life in prison.
